Keep Kids Safe: 7 Everyday Tips Every Parent Should Know

When it comes to keeping children safe, small, consistent actions can make a big difference.

Holly Schiele, NP, a pediatric provider at FMOL Health | Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health at Airline, shares practical safety tips that families can use at home, on the go and wherever kids play.

1. Car Seats: The First Line of Protection

Car seats are not just a legal requirement. They save lives. Make sure your child’s car seat is appropriate for their age, weight and height, and that it’s installed correctly. Even small errors in installation can reduce its effectiveness. Check the car seat manual or visit a certified inspection station if you’re unsure.

2. Water Safety: Eyes on the Water

Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. Always supervise children around pools, lakes and even bathtubs. Holly recommends putting phones away and sharing supervision duties during gatherings, so someone is always watching. Life jackets are essential for boating or open water activities.

3. Furniture & TVs: Prevent Tip-Overs

Heavy furniture and TVs may seem stable, but kids are naturally curious climbers. Anchor furniture and TVs to the wall, secure cords and drawers, and avoid placing tempting items on top. Even a small tip-over can cause serious injury.

4. Safe Sleep for Babies

Always place babies on their backs to sleep in a crib, bassinet or pack-and-play. Keep the sleep space free of pillows, blankets and toys, and avoid falling asleep while holding your baby. Safe sleep practices reduce the risk of sleep-related injuries.

5. Helmets: Protect Those Growing Brains

Whether biking, scootering, skateboarding or riding ATVs, helmets are non-negotiable. Head protection saves lives and prevents serious brain injuries. Make sure helmets fit properly and meet safety standards.

6. Poison Prevention: Out of Reach, Out of Danger

Store medications, cleaning supplies and other toxic items out of children’s reach and sight. If a child ingests something suspicious, call Poison Control immediately. Don’t wait to seek treatment.

7. Consistency Is Key

Every little precaution counts. By taking these simple steps consistently, you help create a safer environment at home, in the car, and wherever your children play. Holly reminds parents that safety isn’t about perfection. It’s about being mindful and prepared.

Keeping kids safe doesn’t require complicated routines. It just takes attention, consistency and a few practical steps.
