Big Comfort for Little ‘Pokes’: How Our Pediatric Clinics Make Shots Less Scary

No one loves shots. And for kids, especially little ones who don’t yet understand why we’re doing it, a “poke” can feel overwhelming. But what if we could make that moment a little easier, a little calmer and maybe even a little empowering?

At FMOL Health | Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health, we’re always looking for ways to deliver the best care, not just medically, but also emotionally. That’s why our clinics are now using a powerful little tool that’s been a big success in our hospital: the Bravery Bug.

What’s a Bravery Bug?

The Bravery Bug (also called “Buzzy”) is a small device that uses cold and gentle vibration to help block pain. It sits near the site of the poke and works by distracting the brain and numbing the skin, reducing discomfort without using any medicine or extra needles. It’s quick, safe and effective. And for many children, it’s a real game-changer.

This approach has been championed by our Child Life Specialists at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, where it’s helped young patients feel more confident and in control. And now, we’re bringing that same level of excellence and compassion to our pediatric primary care clinics.

Helping Your Child Feel Brave — Together

Great care isn’t just about what happens in the exam room. It’s about partnering with parents to support each child’s whole experience. That includes:

  • Preparing kids with honest, age-appropriate language
(We say “poke” instead of “shot” or “needle.”)
  • Giving them small jobs to do
(“Hold still like a statue!” “Count to five with me!”)
  • Using comfort positioning
(Hugs in your lap are encouraged!)
  • Offering fun distractions
(Cartoons, songs, I Spy — whatever works!)

Our teams are trained to help you find the most comfortable, calming approach for your child. Because we know that when kids feel safe and supported, they’re more likely to leave feeling brave and proud of themselves.

Know What to Expect

Want to be even more prepared for your next visit? Our What to Expect at Well Checks guide outlines which vaccines are recommended at each age so there are no surprises. It’s a simple, helpful tool for planning ahead and talking with your child about what’s coming.

Ask About the Bravery Bug

The Bravery Bug is now available in many of our pediatric clinics. If you think it could help your child during a vaccine, blood draw or IV, just ask your care team! We’re happy to use it and to talk through other comfort techniques we’ve seen work wonders.

Because your child deserves a care experience that’s not just clinically excellent, but emotionally thoughtful, too.

Bravery bugs were made possible by donations from the community.
