When a child is born, families anticipate overwhelming joy.
But when a newborn requires unexpected intensive medical attention, that joy often intertwines with anxiety and fear. In these highly vulnerable moments, having access to advanced, compassionate care close to home is a profound blessing.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Newton and Betsy Thomas, FMOL Health | Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital brought a new beacon of hope to our community. In December 2020, the hospital proudly opened the Newton & Betsy Thomas Family Center for Newborn & Infant Intensive Care (CNIIC).
This Level III Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides destination-level care for newborns and infants facing complex medical needs. It stands as a testament to what we can achieve when clinical excellence meets genuine compassion.
A Deeply Personal Vision for Community Care
For the Thomas family, this monumental gift was deeply personal. It reflects their enduring passion for the health and vitality of our community. They envisioned a sanctuary where critically ill newborns could receive the highest level of advanced medical care right here at home, sparing families the emotional and financial burden of traveling far during an already stressful time.
Their vital investment was designed with both immediate impact and future sustainability in mind. By blending immediate-use funds with a long-term endowment, the Thomas family ensured this lifesaving facility will not only meet the urgent needs of today but will continue to adapt and grow to serve generations to come.
“Our family is excited to partner with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital to help ensure the highest level of comprehensive neonatal and infant care is always accessible to our local community and across our state,” the Thomas family shares. “Today is just the beginning, and we look forward to witnessing the growth in advanced care offered to our area’s tiniest patients.”
Destination-Level Care for Our Tiniest Patients
Creating a healing environment for fragile infants requires intentional design and expert staffing. Spanning an impressive 6,700 square feet, the CNIIC features 10 private rooms. These rooms offer families a quiet, sacred space to bond with their babies while receiving round-the-clock medical attention.
The center is staffed by a dedicated, highly trained team of neonatologists, compassionate nurses, and skilled respiratory therapists. Led by Dr. Elizabeth Lindsay, this collaborative team delivers personalized care tailored to the unique physiological needs of every infant who comes through their doors.
Reaching Across Louisiana
The impact of the CNIIC extends far beyond the walls of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Because critical care cannot wait, the center operates in tandem with our specialized Pediatric Transport Team.
This highly trained transport unit safely brings fragile babies from communities across Louisiana directly to the CNIIC. Whether an infant is born in a neighboring parish or across the state, this seamless system ensures that the most vulnerable patients receive the urgent, advanced care they require without delay.
A Lasting Promise to Families
At FMOL Health, healthcare is more than a service we provide; it is a ministry we live out every day. The Thomas family’s generosity represents much more than a financial gift. It is a lasting promise to our community that when families face their hardest, most frightening moments, they will never have to face them alone.
Through the Newton & Betsy Thomas Family Center for Newborn & Infant Intensive Care, we continue to steward our mission forward, welcoming every person and nurturing the most fragile lives among us.
